Stobbes Machandel is a drink with a long tradition. It is not without reason that Gdańsk jałowiecka was called the “national drink”. The founder of the brand – Piotr Stobbe – from the beginning paid great attention to the appearance of the products. The bottle had the shape of a barrel and its characteristic features included horizontal grooves on the glass. The label depicting an isosceles cross also attracted attention. Currently, the product is difficult to obtain, which is due to the fact that its production moved to Germany, where the Stobbe family was located after the war. However, Gdańsk is still associated with this alcohol – especially the native inhabitants of the Coast.
Kurfursten is a strong, 40% liqueur produced in Gdańsk according to a 16th-century formula prepared by Ambrose Vermöllen, a Mennonite from Lier. When a religious refugee moved to Tricity, he brought with him many Dutch recipes previously unknown in Prussia. After settling in Gdańsk, he started his own alcohol production, and his most popular products include Goldwasser, Krambambuli, and Kurfursten. This herbal and spicy drink was created especially for the Elector of Gdańsk, hence its name – Starogdański Elektorski Liqueur. Due to the special popularity of the drink among the voters of the Reich, it is often called Kurfursten Alkohol (German: Kurfürsten means elector).
